The hottest trends on the fall runways range from the ladylike to the bold and brazen. No designer epitomizes these looks more so than Nicholas Ghesquière of Balenciaga.

Ghesquière's designs are known for fierce and futuristic styling and razor sharp tailoring. According to Marie Claire, August 2008, Balenciaga’s is one label that sums up the looks of the season. With space-age strong sculpted shapes and high-tech detailing with structured collars and volumnous sleeves. Cropped jackets sit on top of ultra-tailored pants, offering some of the season’s most stylish pieces.

Balenciaga is one of the few fashion labels which truly design “new” clothes. According to the New York Mag.com, whereas most designers come out with new variations on the same pieces season after season, altering shapes and colors, but essentially sticking to the old familiars, Ghesquière’s designs go beyond that." His sharp, tailored cuts and futuristic designs embrace the use of modern technology and unusual fabrics (plastic and latex), giving his outfits a modern makeover on traditional themes, which have morphed into original styles that rock the runways.

Balenciaga's Little Black Dress

This season’s little black dress is one such example. Balenciaga’s sculpted cut-out LBD is already being imitated by high street stores such as Debenhams.” In the ready-to-wear collection there are several more equally striking black dresses with strong sculpted styling and split skirts, taking the traditional LBD to a futuristic level. Another show-stopper is a dramatic architecturally shaped black and white dress with scrolled peplum falling to the waist.

Space-Aged Styling

In addition to feminine tailored pants and figure-hugging cropped jackets, and draped velvet and taffeta tops, Ghesquière also showcased some demurely cut dresses from latex and ultra-skinny pants with inserts made from latex too, in true space-age tradition. However, despite the futuristic undercurrents, Ghesquière always remains respectful of founder, Cristobal Balenciaga, sharp tailoring and elegance, which makes the Balenciaga label so commercially appealing.

Referring to his fall collection, Style.com quotes Ghesquière as saying that he wanted something austere…but with a bit of Spanish drama.”

Balenciaga Shoes for Fall 2008

When is comes to women's shoes, Balenciaga became a major look of the spring summer season with its fierce-looking footwear, the tribal gladiator sandal. Its shoe appeal is no less dramatic for fall, with space-age looking shoe boots and more demure, but still striking, ankle-strap sandals with embellished enamel heels. There are also knee-high winter white slouchy boots, whose soft lines serve to add a dramatic contrast to the harsher sculpted styles.

Balenciaga’s New Shopping Site

The house of Balenciaga as also recently launched its new website, enabling US residents to have the opportunity to buy shoes, Balenciaga bags and other fashion accessories online.
