Fashion designer Oscar de la Renta is famous for creating classically designed, beautiful clothing which are perfectly cut and flatter a woman's body.

A master of beauty and melding global influences, over his nearly 60 year career at the forefront of fashion, Oscar de la Renta has always understood how to make clothing for the women who seek astonishing, entrance-making gowns for galas or parties or a flawlessly cut dress to wear to the office. His beautifully crafted, unabashedly ultrafeminine clothes have made de la Renta's fashions coveted by women with style for decades.

Building the Oscar de la Renta Fashion House - Tropical Beginnings

Born in 1932 in the Dominican Republic’s vibrant capital city, Santo Domingo, de la Renta’s childhood was spent enjoying the color-filled tropical island, its flowers and sunshine, which, acording to OscardelaRenta.com, have and continue to inform the designer’s vibrant palette and beautiful designs.

Spanish Culture & Fashion

At the age of 18, de la Renta moved to Spain to study painting at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. While there, Oscar became enthralled with the Spanish culture, says OscardelaRenta.com: “from the music and art, to the bullfights and flamenco, to of course… the fashion.”

As his interest in the world of design flourished, de la Renta began sketching for Spain’s leading fashion houses and soon acquired a coveted apprenticeship with Spain’s most renowned couturier, Cristóbal Balenciaga.

Paris Couture

The designer’s website expalins that next step in de la Renta’s career took him to Paris where he joined the prominent house of Lanvin as a couture assistant, absorbing the extravagant world of haute-couture: the lavish fabrics, over the top feathers, exquisite jewels, and ornate trims.

New York Fashion

Coming to realize that the future of fashion was in ready-to-wear and not couture, de la Renta ventured the New York where he began designing for Elizabeth Arden’s custom-made clothing line.

The Oscar de la Renta Label

In 1965, the Oscar de la Renta signature ready-to-wear label was created, incorporating his Latin American passion for brilliant color, his European-trained eye for luxurious fabrics and embellishments, and his exceptional understanding for all things feminine – the line became an instant favorite among media and retailers.

Woman is Oscar de la Renta’s Muse

In an interview with Elle magazine for their April 2008 issue, de la Renta explained that while today's designers may take their inspiration from themes or abstract concepts – such as Balenciaga's Nicolas Ghesquiere taking inspiration from automotive design; Viktor&Rolf's use of the circus theme as a core idea behind their collection; or Zac Posen's use of Shakers as insight into design – de la Renta's only muse is woman, and he has no desire other than to create garments and accessories that make a women beautiful:

"I do not work with themes," he says, "The designers today work so differently from the way I learned my craft. The way I work, the way I have always worked, is from tradition. What I learned has never changed. The evolution is in a woman's life."

Oscar de la Renta’s Garments Are Figure Flattering

Since opening his fashion house in 1965, Oscar de la Renta has been shameless in devoting his career to classic style, and exquisitely constructed clothing designed for the bodies and lifestyles of real women.

A master of his craft, de la Renta knows how to cut. His silhouettes are forgiving thanks to sturdy fabrics which never cling or reveal too much; Oscar de la Renta's clothes have so much structure integrated into the garments themselves, that they hide whatever flaws a woman may have.

In addition to his ready-to-wear and couture lines, Oscar de la Renta has created lines of accessories, eyewear, fragrances, retail, bridal, and home and furniture collections.

Award-Winning Fashion

Oscar de la Renta has received soaring reviews and awards, and continues design clothing that appeals and is relevant to the modern woman. Long a favorite designer of such political and powerful as Nancy Regan and Barbara Walters, Oscar de la Renta is dressing a new, younger generation of women including a frontline of leading celebrities: fashion icon Sarah Jessica Parker, Penelope Cruz, Jennifer Connelly and Jessica Biel to name a few.

On OscardelaRenta.com, de la Renta says, "I have never worked as hard in my life as I do now, but I am loving every minute of it. My best times are when I am in my studio designing.”
