Like politics, fashion creates some odd bedfellows. Tattoo'ed & huge-haired Motley Crue guitarist, Nikki Sixx, recently teamed up with Kelly Gray, formerly of conservative fashion label St. John (founded by her mother, Marie Gray), to launch a line of menswear called Royal Underground. The line will include leather, printed cashmere, sweatsuits, t-shirts, and denim, all featuring crown & crest motifs, and linings with song lyrics penned by Sixx. Cleverly, the hangtags are all-access passes that have been laminated.

Gray is fashionworld-famous as the willowy blonde featured in the St. John ads, typically surrounded by a bevy of beautiful boys and in exotic locales. Widely derided by fashion insiders for their egomaniacal quality - not to mention blatant, but completely fabulous, cheesiness - Gray was replaced by Angelina Jolie after St. John was sold and the Grays left the company. "I don't think anyone else could have convinced me to get back into this business, but he has a passion for clothing that is unparalleled," Gray said in an interview with WWD. "He has a little bit of my dad in him, as well as my mom's attention to detail."

Gray became fast friends with Sixx - who designs his own stage costumes - after visiting the band at various venues on-tour. "I became fascinated with Nikki because he was so passionate about clothes, and I think he was curious about me, too," Gray said. They sealed the deal at a lunch after the tour finished. "We went into the market and realized that so many people want to live this rock 'n' roll lifestyle, but that not many can pull off the watered-down costume look, so we decided to go luxe," she said.
